Community Interests:
The background of my website is an oil painting depicting the designated Historical Site of The Altona Mennonite Meeting House built in 1852. I am Secretary-Treasurer and one of 5 Trustees of this solid, simple, yet attractive building. Surrounded by a cemetery with graves of pioneers who settled in the area in the early 1800's. Located at the intersection of the Uxbridge/Pickering Townline & Sideline #30, in the Township of Pickering, Ontario.
A number of Mennonite families, emigrants from Pennsylvania and other areas, gathered for worship in their homes until 1852 when the present building was constructed.
Feel free to contact me for more information, tours or how you can contribute to the preservation of this building.
Special Thanks to Mrs. Anna (Norman) Fretz allowing reproduction of this painting.
Special Thanks to the Artist, Mrs. Elsie (Joseph) Nighswander.
